On this particular job we were asked for a bid for removing the tree, hauling it away and grinding the stump and hauling that away too. Upon inspection of the tree we noticed by the shape that it has been topped several years ago. Topping a tree is where one would literally pick a spot somewhere up the trunk and cut everything above that point off. This is an old method of trimming and is frowned at in the tree-care industry. Whenever you top a tree out you are promoting cavities and hollow chambers in whats left of the trunk. On this particular tree we found two 8 – 10 foot hollow chambers in two of the stems. Great for squirrels, we found about 5, bad for tree structure and support.
